Fraudulent Advertising by Gutter Helmet

Based on the advertising claim that I would never need to clean or worry about gutters again, I had Gutter Helmet installed on my house several years ago. From the start, there was trouble. First, the "covered" gutters filled up right away and needed cleaning out within a month of installation. I phoned the company, and after lots of protestation that "this shouldn't happen," they agreed to send someone to clean out the gutters. It took 3-4 months for this person to show up, and he was crude and flippant -- no one I would have hired if I had done the choosing. I complained about the fact that my "maintenance-free" gutters evidently would need cleaning several times a year -- why hadn't the salesman told me that the product wouldn't work well in a heavily wooded neighborhood? "You don't expect them to tell you that," he said, "when they just want to make a sale." Over the years the gutters did, indeed, need cleaning every few months, and the company was never gracious about it. There were always lengthy delays in having someone come out and rude or inept workers. NEXT, Gutter Helmet informed me that I would need to pay for the services of someone to hose off the outside of the gutters with detergent or else the product wouldn't work properly. This time I complained directly to the president of the local company, and under threat of a lawsuit for fraudulent advertising, he agreed to send someone to do that job with no cost to me. ULTIMATELY, Gutter Helmet on a routine cleaning visit reported that one of my own gutters was broken and needed to be replaced. If it wasn't replaced, the contract was invalidated. Skeptical, I had an independent inspection performed by someone else and was told that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the gutter. THE LAST STRAW was the phone call I made to ask Gutter Helmet to come and remove the worthless product. That labor, they informed me, would cost $200, but "Don't you really want to keep the gutter covers? They really ARE a good product,"they cooed. That was the last contact I ever will have with the company. I am now back to paying someone to clean out my gutters several times a year. I WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED IN BEING PARTY TO A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST GUTTER HELMET IF ONE IS IN PROCESS OR IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO MOUNT ONE.

I have same issues. Oak trees cause lip edge build up and gutter clogging!

The product requires cleaning of the edge of the gutters every 6 to 8 weeks to prevent overrun. I use a brush on the end of a pole and work my way around the house! This is a hassle!!

But necessary - John 70399****! Would participate in class action since their claims are not true and I have clear proof!

Gutter Helmet - Confused thought maintenance free?
I was just told that the gutter guards need to come off to clean all the black roof sludge Andy tree dirt in the gutters. I tried to contact the home office but was redirected to a phone message. Not sure if next step because the guards are screwed in under the shingles.

Glacier Creation from Gutter Helmet Installation

Since installing "Gutter Helmet" to keep our gutters free of debris we find we have created a growing glacial ice field outside our doors. The wife and I both wear "Yak-Trax" to traverse the dangerous ice we must cross to get to and from our entry ways. HaVING TWO DOGS GOING IN AND OUT PREVENTS USE OF DEICING MATERIALS. I cannot expect my decking to last too long if all I can do is chip with a spud. Legal advise says no warning signs for visitors as that is an admission that we know a dangerous condition exists. You were very careful to avoid mentioning this phenom in your sales pitch and materials. The first I read about the problem came in the materials the installers hande me on completion of install AND then it was mentioned several times in your billing invoice materials, which were now pitching your solutions to this HAZARD. Maybe, ol' Del Thebaud,Sr., would like to explain those missing warnings on the ice orior to install. W.G.Thomas

The full sales-pitch

The appointment setter was adamant that the appointment would be when both my spouse and I were at home. I finally had to get nasty to get that to stop. I did set an appointment, however, for an estimate. The salesperson that arrived obviously had no knowledge of the needs of our home. He spent time on the phone getting advice and taking pictures. Eventually, after about 30 minutes, he came in the house to present the estimate and took about 15 minutes presenting the company and the product. when he got to the price proposal he started about twice what the other 2 bids I have already gotten and proceeded to then add discounts for various things like senior, military, etc, and lastly a "purchase today" discount which was the largest at 15%. He was offended when I told him to give me the "not today" estimate because I was getting 3 other bids. He attempted to get me to sign his estimate, which in my opinion was not necessary. I refused. I feel sorry for this young man who has decided that selling for this company is necessary. He followed the company script to the letter and as he did so, I became more and more disinterested in their product and service.

Lifetime material warranty is worthless -- not honored

Purchased and installed brown color Gutter Helmet in 1999. Installation is central Pennsylvania. in 2005 reported severe color fading with bare metal exposed on some sections. After one year waiting some sections were replaced but with a different color. I was told that fading was not Gutter Guard's fault and that new product was treated differently and better. I had to pay for 12 replacement panels. 2013 all sections now fading again and bare metal exposed. Called manufacture (Southeastern Metals Manufacturing Company)and was advised that paint fading and peeling is not covered by warranty as original manufacture (American Metal Products) used inferior product. Not one word in my warranty excludes paint fading or peeling. Paint applied during the manufacturing process is uniformly defined as part of manufacturing. No relief offered by Gutter Guard Southeastern Metals Manufacturing Company. This company fails to comply with its warranty and customer service is rated on a scale of 1 to 10 at zero.

GH is the WORST company to do business with due to their horrible customer service and inferior overpriced product that doesn't hold up to it's claims by independent studies. This gutter guard system destroys homes due to clogging and overflowing causing serious water damage. NEVER purchase GH's product you'll be sorry!!!

Guest

Nick, ya as a matter of fact I DO work for GH. the dealer in Pennsylvania told us about this Jerico46's post because the guy kept calling them demanding service.

Someone cruised by his house, didn't bother knocking but took one look at the stuff and it's NOT GUTTER HELMET. Your *** FACE is BS, pal.

Dave: Your idea of a thorough inspection/verification is having one of your employees (a flunky by the sound of it) drive by the house? Are you serious?

You didn't have the decency to inspect Jerico46's gutters for yourself and form a better vantage point than from the street while in a moving car? There is NO WAY you could make that assessment. You sir, are a fool!

And just goes to point out how incompetent Gutter Helmet is managed. Gutter Helmet is STILL the worst company is the world!!!

Gutter Helmet does not fade and absolutely works. Had I stalled over 17 years and zero problems so I can tell you that whatever you have is not Helmet it's a knock off.

Dave, how do you know Jerico46 has "Gutter Monster"? Did Jerico tell you that personally or you work for Gutter Helmet? Your claim sounds like BS to me.

LIAR! We found out this person has a brand called Gutter Monster. At least throw the right people under the bus, *** hole.

Purchased and installed brown GutterGlove WinterGuard myself in July 2013. Too soon to judge long term performance.

So far it has worked well repelling leaves and pollen and passing up to one inch of rain per hour (an amount that is rare in Pennsylvania but does occur) into the gutter. System also includes a snap-in thermostatic heating wire (the wire automatically increases heat and temperature decreases and vice versa) intended to melt icicles.

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

Had it installed many years ago and now I need to contact them about removal for new roof. First contact gave me wrong number, as did second.

Third call has gone unreturned. This tells me a lot about what has happened to this company. When I originally purchased maybe it was a different vendor, or he just got too big to bother with old customers. The product is decent but it does no good if you have any problem and the company is unresponsive.

For this reason alone, I would not do business with them. They are not on top of their vendors, so this could happen to anyone, in any location.

Worst Ever

I live in Portland Oregon. The Estimator was nice enough and I do believe they have a good product for keeping yuck out of your gutters. But for me that is where it stopped. Installation was scheduled 5 weeks out. It was canceled by Gutter Helmet and rescheduled 2 weeks later. They showed up with a 50' truck and I have a 15' driveway, so they left.... No one would call me back for 2 weeks. They they came again, installed most of the system but left without doing a bay window and a long run-off drain. It took three phone calls and an email to get them to respond... All in all, they just wrote me an email saying "Sorry, we can't finish the job. Please pay our invoice." Unbelievable - These guys in Oregon are the worst.

i paid over #1,600 as my down payment. From day 1 of installation i am having problems. They came back 6 times and still the rain goes behind the gutters wetting my soffits. and whoever is near my front door. Which already are making the wood soft. I called and said i want them to remove them and refund my down payment. I was told by the office i will not get a refund and a lien will be put on my home for the balance of $4,000.00 (my home is a small ranch).I refuse to pay the balance. ARLENE from CLIFTON, NJ.

Sounds like another untrained-flunky at Gutter Helmet is "playing" installer without proper training or license. Don't fall for their scare tactics; they can't put a lien on your home. Dispute the charge with your bank/CC company and talk to your states Attorney Generals Office.

Guest

You're so dumb, man. Any roofing contractor will tell you that you probably have multiple layers of roofing (now against building code BECAUSE it causes leaking behind the gutters) and no flashing (also now against building code for THIS reason).

Stop lying on pissedconsumer. If you had a case, then SUE THEM.

Oh, wait. You're not suing because it's your roof not the Gutter Helmet.

Poor performance, poor product, ripoff prices!!!!

yes, but how much did they charge you to remove and reinstall? i had a roof customer that was told this by the company, and the company wanted $1800 to do that, just for labor!!AND the customer had his gutter guards screwed on TOP of the shingles, and every time it rained hard , water CASCADDED ovr the gutter guards, which resulted in rotted sill plates and dropped concrete at the entry of these people's $500000 home !!Plus when the gutter guards were removed to put the roof on, they were packed with leaves over 6 feet in each direction at an inside corner!!!

Oh, and my neighbor across the street had the same company put gutter guards on their two story home, aand they screwed them on top of the shingles, just like they did mine, and every time it rains more than a drizzle, it looks like like Niagara Falls !!! this company needs to be banned from business!!

Get a price from them-- anywhere from $25 to $30 per foot!! And good look getting them to call back for service, because they sure as *** won't even answer or return your call!!!

Gutter Helmet Mesh Screens Causing Icicles and Inside Water Damage

I had Gutter Helmet of Denver/Northern Colorado install mesh screens on my gutters in Oct 2011. For the past two winters I have experienced a considerable number of icicles forming on just about every square inch of my gutters caused by water running over the gutters, and not into them. The icicles cause numerous ice patches on my front steps, driveway, back patio and on the sidewalk outside my garage access door, exactly in all the places I enter/exit the house. I have also photographed my house and the other houses in my neighborhood during a snowstorm; my house is the only one forming icicles. This past winter (2012-****) I noticed water seeping into a bedroom ceiling, caused by what I believe to be a direct result of the mesh screens -- on the north facing roof slope outside the bedroom, an ice dam forms over the gutter, causing water to back up and under the shingles and seep into the house. Now, I have researched ice dams, and the "scientific" explanation is that they are not caused by gutters, but rather by heat loss from the house causing ice to melt and refreeze. However, I've been in this house for over 18 years, and have never experienced an ice dam or water leak in this bedroom. I have photos from 2006 with two feet of snow on the roof over this bedroom and never had a leak. I also noticed seepage from an ice dam on the north facing roof slope of my unheated garage, so the "heat loss" theory is not valid in my case. My logic is that the mesh is not allowing the snow/water to melt into the gutter, but is allowing the snow to rest on top of the gutter, causing the formation of a snow/ice dam and allowing the eventual melt to run over gutter, possibly between the house and gutter, and eventually seep into the house. So, I called the company, explained the situation, and requested a service call to assess my problem. The rep denied that the screens were causing the problem, but it would cost $50 for a service call if I still wanted them to come take a look. I paid over $3000 for the mesh screen installation, I expect at least a free service call from a company for that price. I contacted "consumer advocate" Tom Martino, who did not post my complaint of this company on his website, and did not have the courtesy to contact me back. I won't ever trust his endorsements either. My last resort is contacting my insurance company to get their opinion. I will post another update after the adjuster arrives. As far as I'm concerned, my loss is $3000, because I will probably rip these screens off the gutters as soon as the weather warms up. Plus, whatever it takes to repair the bedroom ceiling.

Have the same situation with their solid gutter helmet. After two winters of ice dams and water backing up staining the ceilings I took them off. Company said their product can not cause this but offered to give me an estimate on installing electric heat strips.

Guest

I have had gutter helmets installed on my house for two years and for two years I have had icicles form after snowfalls. No one can tell me that this is caused from heat loss.

I have lived here for 47 years and have never had this problem before. Contractors just do not want to say that gutter helmets should not be installed in areas with snowfall.

Guest

Gutter Helmet has been misleading and abusing their customers for far too long. It's time to start a class action lawsuit against the corporation.

While I can agree with this I can tell you that I've never been in the position where I'd be willing (as I will be this year) to pay big $'s to have this product removed and replaced. It is a hazard to my property and I just wish there was a remediation available that was less costly.

The contractor who sold this system to me offers to (for more $'s) install a heating system to solve the ice problem it is causing. Yes that would likely work but it is more $'s than replacing with a reasonable product and will require energy use to heat all winter which, frankly, is *** IMO to resolve a problem taht was not there before the helmet.

Guest

Ricky: No, I'm not a Gutter Helmet employee. Yes, I am an energy specialist.

This happens every year on these websites probably because the weather is cold and we all have to sit here and listen to this unedited garbage from people that know nothing about energy improvements in the home. Yes, there is a booming energy improvement industry and yes, we look for places to find ignorance. Gutter guard complaints like this Gutter Helmet complaint are good places to look because many people blame the gutter guard for their ice. We step in because it's a business opportunity and we're the ones that really know what's going on.

I have seen other energy specialists on this website who have posted about ice buildup, and it sounds the same because this is simply known factual information. It probably sound the same because we're talking about the same thing: ice buildup is caused by heat loss from the house. That is the proven solution to ice buildup.

"Rick" in the previous post is also correct that Energy Star (the EPA and Dept of Energy) have published information to this effect, along with his statement about millions of engineers, architects. And he's right about this too: just Google "ice damming." You will find NO mention of Gutter Helmet or Leaf Guard, just a whole bunch of stuff about heat buildup inside the home because we know that's what it is.

I have a unique perspective on this as I've now had multiple seasons both before "gutter helmet" and after on the same house. I can tell you that my experience is that the ice buildups is _Dramatically_ greater with the gutter helmet than either non-protected gutters or with another "screen in the gutter" type of protector.

I happen to have some parts of my house with gutter helmet and others with another product (in the gutter type) - the sections with gutter helment had massive ice buildup last winter, the others had little to none.

I've had air sealing done, added insulation well beyond code etc - yes those factors come into play. What I believe is happening on the gutter helmet is that the large surface area allows quick cooling and freezing of water that comes from snow melt (it has to melt sometime even with the coldest roof).

This then builds up on the edge away from the house and becomes a quickly growing problem as the new water hits the cold metal that is quickly conducting the heat into the ice that acts as a heat sink to freeze. IN any case, the results are impressive ice buildup where otherwise there would not be (when we had the gutter helmets on the sections now with them removed we had massive ice - last two winters zero ice buildup...)

I would recommend ONLY considering this product if you are in a location that does not get cold.

My new gutter helmet guards over existing gutters

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
After having my hip replaced in November 2016 and getting older, I find I couldn't climb on my roof to clean out my gutters. I contacted Harry Helmet and a sales person was out the next day. He surveyed the property and sat down and talked about the value of having the Gutter Helmet system installed. He then provided a quote which was very reasonable in every regard! After agreeing to the terms, a crew was out to install them in four weeks. since the weather had turned very cold and snowy, it took them several days to install after it warmed up. I was kept informed every day of their work. After the completed installation they cleaned up everything left on ground and roof. This crew was very professional competent and represented Harry Helmet very well. I was very pleased that I found such an outstanding Company to provide me with a professional quality job. I would recommend this Company to anyone who is thinking of adding gutter guards to make their job easier and protect water damage in their basements. I am proud to be a supporter of Harry Helmet!

Gutter Helmet - Customer Care Review

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I live in Vincentown New Jersey. I just had gutter helmet put on my house in November 2016. The installer was named Ralph, whom was rude and seemed like he just wanted to get in and get out without making sure it was done right. Not to mention, had the smell of alcohol on his breath but I didn't say anything. On the first rain I was outside on my porch when I noticed water pouring down like a waterfall over the side of the roof. I called gutter helmet to come take a look. They ended up sending Ralph out again and he told me that it was just a simple clog, which I found odd because that's what gutter helmet is specifically made to keep out. So I guess he didn't clean out my gutters like he said he did when he installed the helmet. The very next rain, the exact same waterfall-like problem was happening again. I called gutter helmet again and they sent two men out and quickly found the problem. They told me that my gutters were pitched wrong and took off my helmet and re-pitched my gutter and put my helmet back on. The system is working now and I'm not here to complain about the product of gutter helmet or the company of gutter helmet. I'm here to complain about the scam artist Ralph who doesn't care if he doesn't do the job right. If you decide to buy gutter helmet, in which I recommend. Be sure to talk to your installer. If they are a man with piercings in his ears and works by himself, I would highly recommend getting him away from your house before he does more damage than good. Ask for another installation crew because Ralph is not reliable and will not treat you as an equal.
